Melbourne, FL - November 15, 2013 - Jamie Tworkowski's intention was never to start a worldwide movement- it was to help a friend. What started as a small support group for a friend suffering from depression and addiction, quickly launched into the prominent non-profit organization,
To Write Love On Her Arms.
To Write Love on Her Arms is a non-profit movement dedicated to presenting hope and finding help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury and suicide. TWLOHA exists to encourage, inform, inspire and also to invest directly into treatment and recovery. Since its start in 2006, they have donated over $1,000,000 directly into treatment and recovery and have answered over 170,000 emails from over 100 countries.
TWLOHA has not stopped flourishing and continues to grow daily. The organization now consists of UChapters all around America and in parts of Canada, College Tours where Tworkowski speaks to students in need, as well as MOVE Community Conferences, which consist of workshops led by professional counselors. In addition, TWLOHA has recently launched The Storytellers, a two-month campaign where a student organizer works with a faculty advisor on behalf of their high school to create awareness about mental health issues, bring the TWLOHA message to their school, and foster community on their campus.
TWLOHA was most recently awarded a $1 million grant from Chase at the first-ever American Giving Awards (AGAs) announced on NBC. They received great support during this contest from the likes of Sophia Bush, Miley Cyrus, Amy Lee, Switchfoot, Perez Hilton, Christina Perri, and Anberlin. They won 2nd place in the Chase Community Giving Contest in 2010 and supporters Miley Cyrus, Joaquin Phoenix, and Liv Tyler joined forces to make a special video together with the founder of TWLOHA. In the same year they won a full-page color ad in USA Today from a Twitter contest, the organization is thrilled with the support that has grown around them.
Tworkowski has been a guest on CNN.com, CBS News Sunday Morning, Steven's Untitled Rock Show on the FUSE Network and the organization has been featured on NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams and MTV. Print publications that have covered the inspirational movement have been Seventeen Magazine, Paste Magazine, Teen Vogue, Alternative Press, Foam Magazine, USA Today, Newsday, Florida Today, as well as a 6 page feature in Rolling Stone Magazine, amongst many others. Jamie also won the mtvU Woodie Award in the "Good Woodie" category against artists such as Alicia Keys and Wyclef Jean. He is the only founder ever nominated who is not a musician.
To put it simply, it all comes down to a vision...
The vision is that community and hope and help would replace secrets and silence.
The vision is people putting down guns and blades and bottles.
The vision is that we can reduce the suicide rate in America and around the world.
The vision is that we would learn what it means to love our friends, and that we would love ourselves enough to get the help we need.
The vision is better endings. The vision is the restoration of broken families and broken relationships. The vision is people finding life, finding freedom, finding love. The vision is graduation, a Super Bowl, a wedding, a child, a sunrise. The vision is people becoming incredible parents, people breaking cycles, making change.
The vision is the possibility that your best days are ahead.
The vision is the possibility that we're more loved than we'll ever know.
The vision is hope, and hope is real.
You are not alone, and this is not the end of your story.
