Drive was a five-piece progressive and powerful metal band originally formed in Houston, Texas by guitarist Rick Chavez; they released two albums, Characters in Time (1988) and Diablero (1992).

Characters in Time is now available on iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/characters-in-time/id397887259

Drive was David Taylor (vocals), Rick Chavez (guitar/vocals), Mercy Valdez (guitar on Characters in Time), Mike Conde (guitar on Diablero), Michael Anthony Guerrero (bass), and Valentine San Miguel (drums).

Just out of high school in the mid ’80s, the band moved to Los Angeles, which was quickly becoming the epicenter of the ’80s rock scene. Winning a radio contest with their song “I Need the Nights”, Drive landed on the KNAC Best of the West Compilation album that was released on Rampage Records.  Soon after Rampage signed the band and in July of 1988 they released their debut album, Characters in Time. The album received tremendous reviews from the industry’s top hard rock press, including the coveted 5 “K” rating from Kerrang! Magazine. The album also received solid airplay from hard rock stations around the country.

What separated Drive from some of the other bands of the Sunset Strip was their intelligent lyrics and intricate musicianship.  What endeared them to the rock critics and fans alike was that they were more Iron Maiden than Poison, more Judas Priest than Winger, but with a strong and original voice of their own.  The band released their sophomore album Diablero in 1992.

Unfortunately, a shake-up at the label along with the dawn of the metal-killing “grunge” scene left the album without much of a push, the bands recording career was put on hold and the members moved back to Texas.

Sadly, while driving along a San Antonio interstate on June 25, 2009, singer David Taylor lost control of his vehicle after a tire came off, causing the car to crash. He was airlifted to an area hospital where he died of his injuries five days later.

David Taylor is truly missed but the music of Drive lives on.
