Fringe Records will release Legacy, a 12-track album from North Carolina's notorious punk rock band FUJIWARA on May 12, 2015. This album is a catalogue of Fujiwara's fan favorites from over the span of the band's nearly 20-year history. FUJIWARA is a high energy, crowd engaging three piece based out of Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina. Both their performances and off stage personalities have earned them legendary status in the east coast surf and skate community. As the saying goes, "I went to a fight and a FUJIWARAshow broke out". FUJIWARA is always rocking, ready to prove that they still deserve the respect that they've earned.
The Legacy album is a chance for a broader audience to catch up with FUJIWARA. These are the songs on which FUJIWARA has built their reputation as hard hitting, unashamed, punk rebel anthem rockers. TheLegacy tracks have put them on stage with bands like Angry Samoans, the Misfits, Murphy's Law, and The Candy Snatchers. FUJIWARA also has a credible history in the surf and skate world. Tracks from Legacy have been featured in surf videos from brands like Lost Enterprises ("5'5'' 19 ¼ Redux"), Eastside Productions ("Dirty South Surf"), 10th Street Brothers' Productions("Magic Carpet Ride"), and more.
Matt Pruett wrote in Eastern Surf Magazine that FUJIWARA "tackle[s] deeper issues such as love, loss, and religion. The mood of the music is 100% anger incarnate. Driving guitars and hyper kinetic drums are perfectly balanced with lead singer Billy Burley's rebelliously youthful voice. ... Pick up FUJIWARA and dance with the storm. A Category 5 all the way." With influences like Bad Religion, The Dwarves, Supersuckers, and The Descendents, FUJIWARA's tight musicianship creates an impressively complex sound for a three piece band.
Legacy comes just before the band heads into the studio at The Jam Room in Columbia, South Carolina to record their new album for Fringe Records. Jay Matheson at The Jam Room has also recorded bands such as Guttermouth, The Queers and ASG. Fringe Records' Scott Gorman specifically sought out Matheson for FUJIWARA's recording because of his track record in capturing this kind of music. "That kind of pure but still gritty sound is hard to get across in recording. I know Jay can get the same kind of quality with the music FUJIWARA is bringing."
FUJIWARA has always lived the FUJIWARA legend. Undistracted by social media and self promotion, their sound and history embody the individualism and rebellion of punk rock. Now with Fringe Records behind them, FUJIWARA will reach a wider audience-- and keep punk rock alive.
