Hayley and her co-writers initially started working on this song with the simple notion that 'girls like girls, like boys do.’ This idea felt refreshing and real for Hayley to sing about. We hear so many songs about the guy who stole another guy’s girl; why can’t a girl do the same? She loved the idea of writing a song that came from a very confident perspective.

Kiyoko said, “Beyond the love story the video also has a theme of self-acceptance and standing firm for what we want and believe in. Whether you're fighting yourself, your feelings, or the judgements of others; the despair, joy and relief felt when you're true to yourself makes it all worthwhile.”

As for the video (which was co-directed with Austin S. Winchell), she wanted to create a more grounded narrative, allowing the colorful lyrics to serve as the heroine's inner monologue.  The goal was to convey a relatable story that shows the innocence of these girls and their love without sensationalizing their interactions.
