Malpas is songwriter Ali M. Forbes and producer Andy Savours. The sound of Malpas combines the hushed melancholy of Nick Drake and the euphoric soundscapes of early Aphex Twin with a dollop of Tears For Fears pop ambition and Beta Band lo-fi scratchiness added in. Malpas is about simple songs of love, loss, loneliness and finding freedom in the imagination and the juxtoposition of acoustic and electronic instrumentation makes for an all together innovative sound.

For Andy Savours, this is his first official venture out from behind the mixing desk, starting his career training under Alan Moulder and Flood at Assault and Battery, working on releases from The Horrors, Sigur Ros and The Killers before developing an impressive production resume of his own, making records with artists including The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, My Bloody Valentine andCloud Boat. Savours is presently working in the studio with My Bloody Valentine on a project soon to be revealed.

Malpas began with a few fragile folk songs recorded in an attic in Kings Heath, Birmingham using hushed, low-key vocals embedded in interlocking loops of acoustic instruments and found percussion. The hypnotic atmosphere of these raw sketches seemed to draw on electronic as well as traditional organic influences, so the duo were inspired to further experiment with fusing together these seemingly incompatible reference points. The unique Malpas sound then evolved over email between Birmingham and London as the duo chopped and sampled each other's ideas to create a collection of complex musical pieces that still retain the emotional directness of those initial basic demos.

The summer will be a busy one for Malpas recently appearng at The Great Escape Festival in Brighton and performing later this summer at the renowned Reading/Leeds Festival the third weekend in August. More dates and US plans to be announced soon.
