Some of the most popular songs ever recorded were the result of collaborations. Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney. Nicki Minaj & Beyonce. David Bowie and Freddie Mercury. Patti Smith & Bruce Springsteen. With this in mind, Google challenged Speedy Ortiz’s prolific frontwoman Sadie Dupuis (writing under her new pop moniker Sad13) and burgeoning hip hop queen Lizzo to write a song together in Google Docs.

After hashing out ideas, lyrics and overall structures using Hangouts and Docs from Massachusetts and Minnesota respectively, the pair met in-person for the first time at the Room 17 studio in Brooklyn to record their new single “Basement Queens". With irresistible vocal harmonies and driving bass beats, “Basement Queens” is a celebration of individuality and creation on your own terms.

“Basement Queens” premiered with Jezebel today.

With music and vocals from Sad13 and additional vocals from Lizzo, “Basement Queens” was produced by Computer Magic. Watch the behind-the-scenes video for a look at the entire process.

“Basement Queens” is the first offering from Sad13.
