NEWS: AMERICAN PROPHET Sign With Another Century Records - Release Powerful Music Video

October 31, 2016  •  Leave a Comment

Affected by the turmoil surrounding the upcoming presidential election and the growing worldwide unrest surrounding it, American Prophet has released a single and video for their cover of the 1965 #1 charting protest song, “Eve of Destruction.”  Written by legendary songwriter P.F. Sloan, the band was struck by how the lyrics written 51 years ago still resonate in 2016.  The band paused from recording their debut album, ‘Return to the Earth’ to quickly record the song and Another Century enlisted director Brian Cox to create a powerful lyric video to accompany the release.

The track is available now on iTunes and the video can be seen here: https://youtu.be/fIq7qqERtWs

American Prophet, signed to Another Century by A&R veteran Mike Gitter, is currently putting the finishing touches on ‘Return to the Earth,’ which is being produced by Failure Anthem guitarist Kile Odell [Letters From The Fire, Cover Your Tracks]. The album will be released in early 2017.

About AMERICAN PROPHET: I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness…

In 1957, with those words, poet Allen Ginsburg launched into “Howl,” an anguished protest, literally a howl, against the era’s soul-crushing conformism and sense of personal and artistic annihilation. Decades later, Atlanta’s American Prophet embody that very sentiment in darker, more dangerous days.

“American Prophet sums up the band and the issues that we discuss,” explains frontman and lyricist, Donny Thomas.  “Mental health of people in the United States, a government that no longer has the health and welfare of its citizens in mind. The true problems that this country is facing.”

Taking their name from the early 21st century self-styled mystic Edgar Cayce (who was branded ‘The American Prophet’), American Prophet’s Another Century debut, Return To The Earth, is an affecting view into the jaundiced state of a sick nation. The band’s first released track is a haunting rendition of Barry McGuire’s 1965 protest anthem, “Eve of Destruction.” “It’s a song that’s stood the test of time and means just as much now as it ever has. With everything that’s going on in the streets of America to the chaos of the election to a world always on the brink of war, it’s a song that’s as relevant now as ever.”

“I want people to think,” says Thomas. “I want people to listen to songs like ‘Bring Out Your Dead’ and realize that there are problems in the United States. I want people to listen to songs like ‘Surrender’ where I saw such a beautiful young girl destroyed by the world and what society’s become. I want people to listen and hear that when you are in the worst times of your life, you can actually overcome it.  I lived through it. So can you.”
