LOS ANGELES, Nov. 30, 2016 — Iggy Pop, in collaboration with Brian Burton (Danger Mouse), GOLD director Stephen Gaghan, and GOLD composer Daniel Pemberton, created an original song for the film GOLD — the adventure drama starring Matthew McConaughey. The song, also titled “Gold,” is director Stephen Gaghan’s songwriting debut.
GOLD, inspired by actual events, is the epic tale of one man’s pursuit of the American dream and everything he’ll do to keep it from falling apart. Oscar© winner Matthew McConaughey stars as Kenny Wells, a man raised in the mining business and desperate for a lucky break. He teams up with a mythic geologist and sets off on an amazing journey to find gold in the uncharted jungle of Indonesia. When they make the largest gold find in history, Kenny realizes his dream was only the beginning of the adventure, battling corrupt politicians, Wall Street tycoons and law enforcement, all of whom want to take it from him. Directed by Oscar© winner Stephen Gaghan, the film stars Oscar© winner Matthew McConaughey and Golden Globe© nominees Edgar Ramirez and Bryce Dallas Howard.
“This beautiful and unpredictable film spoke to me of violence, desire, destiny, lust and the inescapable twists of fate,” said Iggy Pop. “The actors and the story spun a web of excitement that left me spent and breathless, so I tried to perform the vocal with that feeling in mind… I found myself at a new level of communication, standing there in the studio with Steve Gaghan and Danger Mouse, singing ‘GOLD’ — a song for our times.”
“Iggy invented punk music. He influenced Lou Reed, the sex pistols, collaborated with David Bowie. To say he’s a legend is an understatement. I still have my original Funhouse on vinyl. His voice has the soul of the country and is perfect for our film,” said GOLD director Stephen Gaghan.
“It feels like there are very few genuine rock icons left in the world these days. Even fewer who can make records that can still cut through and connect with what is happening right here and right now. Iggy Pop is one of that very rare breed. But forget the history, the myths, the legend. I don’t care. I care about the music. And not the music done before but the music done right now. Today. The richness of that voice, the attitude behind the delivery. I cannot think of anyone better to collaborate with for this film. Every now and again you get your dream choice. With GOLD we got it -there is no one in the world who could have encapsulated this story better than Iggy Pop. What an honour," said composer Daniel Pemberton.
GOLD will be released in theaters nationwide January 27, 2017 with a one-week qualifying run in December 2016.
Iggy Pop is one of the most inventive, influential musicians in rock and roll history. He made music history with the band “The Stooges,” which debuted in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1967. With their outrageous stage antics, primal screams and stage diving into the crowd twenty years before it became the norm, they were like nothing anyone had seen or heard and presaged the punk movement. He never stopped defying convention but always defied categorization, exploring a number of musical styles from garage and punk rock to jazz and blues. In 2010, Iggy and the Stooges were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Iggy made a welcome solo return to in 2016 with his new album Post Pop Depression a singular work that stands proudly alongside his releases. Post Pop Depression is equal parts a dream come true for Iggy and co-creator Josh Homme (man of many talents: multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and bandleader of Queens Of The Stone Age) who, produced a record that definitely takes its place in Iggy’s storied discography.
Brian Burton, also known as Danger Mouse is a prolific and eclectic musician, songwriter and producer. He gained attention in 2004 with “The Grey Album” which combined vocals from Jay-Z’s “The Black Album” with instrumentals from The Beatles’ “The White Album.” He and Cee Lo Green formed Gnarls Barkley and produced their albums “St Elsewhere” and “The Odd Couple.” In 2009, he and James Mercer, frontman for the band The Shins, formed the alternative band “Broken Bells.” He has worked with artists such as Beck, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Norah Jones and Adele and has been nominated for 18 Grammys, 5 of which he won. He also won Grammy Producer of the Year in 2011 and has been nominated in that category 5 times.
Filmmaker Stephen Gaghan is probably best known for writing and directing the critically acclaimed geopolitical thriller Syriana, and for writing the Academy Award nominated crime drama Traffic, for which he won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. For his work in television, Gaghan won an Emmy for writing “NYPD Blue” and has more recently directed the 2014 pilot White City for AMC.
Daniel Pemberton is a Golden Globe and multi-BAFTA nominated composer whose innovative and unusual approach to film scoring on projects such as STEVE JOBS, THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. and THE COUNSELOR has established him as one of the freshest and most unpredictable new voices in the industry today.
