Death Cab for Cutie has also announced top-billed performances at a number of top US summer festivals: West Palm Beach, FL’s SunFest (April 29th), Napa, CA’s BottleRock Napa Valley (May 28th), New York, NY’s Governors Ball Music Festival (June 5th), Manchester, TN’s Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival (June 9th-12th), Dover, DE’s Firefly Music Festival (June 16th-19th), Louisville, KY’s Forecastle 2016 (July 15th-17th) and Birmingham, AL’s Sloss Music and Arts Festival (July 16th & 17th).
Meanwhile, Death Cab for Cutie is currently wrapping a hugely successful tour of Australia/New Zealand and Southeast Asia, set to visit Thailand, Singapore, and the Philippines, where the iconic band will headline Manila’s annual Wanderland Festival on March 5th. Next on the agenda is a major Canadian co-headline tour alongside Metric. The “Lights On The Horizon” Tour gets underway March 19th at Montreal, QC’s Bell Centre and then travels through an April 1st finale at Vancouver, BC’s Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre. As if all that weren’t enough, Death Cab for Cutie has scheduled additional US headline shows at Orlando, FL’s Hard Rock Live (April 28th) and Missoula, MT’s Adams Center (May 6th).
The upcoming live dates will be heralded by the new single, “Good Help (Is So Hard To Find),” featured on Death Cab for Cutie’s widely praised album, “KINTSUGI.” The album was recently honored with a “Best Rock Album” nomination for the 58th Annual GRAMMY® Awards – the iconic band’s eighth overall nod.
Death Cab for Cutie’s eighth studio album, “KINTSUGI” made a remarkable chart debut upon its release last March, debuting at #1 on Billboard’s “Top Alternative Albums” and “Top Rock Albums” charts, as well as #8 on the overall SoundScan/Billboard 200. Recorded in Los Angeles with Rich Costey (Foster the People, Muse, Vampire Weekend, CHVRCHES) behind the board, the album was welcomed with acclaim from all corners. “Inevitably elegiac,” praised Stereogum, “full of classic Death Cab structures and melodies, but with new little elements that still sets it apart. Synths and a rhythmic focus play a large role, but feel incorporated seamlessly into the band’s pre-existing aesthetic...” “A return to what made many fans fall in love with the group,” said NOISEY, while WYNC’s Soundcheck declared “KINTSUGI” to be “a classic Death Cab record, if such a thing exists. Over 11 tracks, lead singer and songwriter Ben Gibbard examines heartache, loss, absence – and dresses these themes in driving, occasionally soaring pop garb with impeccable sheen.” Perhaps Magnet summed it up best: “With the new ‘KINTSUGI,’ Death Cab might have made the best record of its 17-year career.”
“Black Sun,” the first single from “KINTSUGI,” proved yet another multi-format success for the band, ascending to #1 at Triple A radio outlets nationwide as well as #2 at Modern Rock. The band’s second single, “The Ghosts of Beverly Drive” arrived as the #1 most-added track at Modern Rock before reaching the top 3 at the format.
Death Cab for Cutie currently features the core membership of singer/guitarist Ben Gibbard, bassist Nick Harmer, and drummer Jason McGerr augmented by new touring members Dave Depper (Menomena, Fruit Bats, Corin Tucker, Ray Lamontagne) and Zac Rae (My Brightest Diamond, Fiona Apple, Lana Del Rey, Gnarls Barkley), both of whom contribute additional guitars and keyboards.
