(July 29, 2016) – Brendan Canning, a founding member of Broken Social Scene, today released the second track from his upcoming solo album, Home Wrecking Years, out on August 12, 2016 via Arts & Crafts (https://www.arts-crafts.ca/). The song is enjoying an exclusive premiere today on the A.V. Club.

“Keystone Dealers” is a soaring jazz and indie rock-inflected track that echoes melodically out of Canning’s imagination in waves of strange, irresistible smoothness. Horns combine with a Casio-samba rhythm while Brendan’s dulcet tones stretch over the mix in cool, languid Bacharach-esque fashion.

“Keystone Dealers” is the Bossa Nova moment on the record,” says Brendan “Justin Peroff came up with the idea for the old-school drum machine and the killer horn section was led by Liam O'Neil who was recently drafted by Kings of Leon. It's one of a few moments on the record that allows the listener some real pause and breath.”

He continues, “I'm pretty sure the song is me trying to find a correlation between a failed relationship and the destruction big oil leaves behind once the damage is done. Words just pop out sometimes and I'm left to sort through for meaning.”

The lead track off his first release since 2013’s You Gots 2 Chill, “Book it To Fresno”, showcased Canning’s penchant for wall-of-sound guitars and syrupy vocal melodies. “Keystone Dealers” reveals the depth of Home Wrecking Years, capturing the smart and breezy summertime feel that cloaks the record.

Meanwhile, Brendan’s other band, Broken Social Scene, recently played their first full shows in a few years at Pitchfork Festival in Chicago and Panorama Music Festival in NYC, treating fans to old favorites, new music, and a couple of tracks played from Brendan’s new collection.

Brendan said, “ When BSS went out on the last couple weekend runs at Pitchfork and Panorama, “Book it to Fresno” had just been released as the lead off track. Of course I had no solo shows booked because I'm deep in BSS land right now but our band has always been there for one another and everyone was into playing it live. In the end we delivered a pretty shit-kicking version of the song which felt wonderful."

Broken Social Scene has announced they are back in the studio working on the follow-up to 2010’s Forgiveness Rock Record.

ABOUT BRENDAN CANNING/HOME WRECKING YEARS: Brendan Canning is the co-founder and a singer/songwriter for the Toronto super-group Broken Social Scene that includes members of Metric, Do Make Say Think, Stars, as well as Grammy-nominated Feist. One of the most enduring and influential alternative bands of the 00s, their record You Forgot It In People defined the “indie rock” era and paved the way for Canadian acts like Arcade Fire and Wolf Parade to break out.

Home Wrecking Years was written between the fall of 2013 and the spring of 2015. Brendan found the inspiration for it while building the live band for his more acoustic 2013 You Gots 2 Chill album. “Maxing out as a six-piece we jammed in my living room, making enough pleasant noise for the neighbors to enjoy during that summer of 2014,” recalls the Toronto songwriter.

“Prime Rob Ford years,” he further notes. “And just as this mayor was falling apart, we were indulging in a little sonic deconstruction on the south end of Draper Street in Toronto.“
