INTERVIEW: DAVID REECE of Sainted Sinners - February 2017

February 23, 2017  •  Leave a Comment

According to famed record producer Chris Tsangarides: "Just imagine the best of Lynyrd Skynyrd meets Whitesnake and your somewhere in the ball park that Sainted Sinners inhabit, these guys know what it is to rock with style." Fronted by the unique, soul-driven voice of American born vocalist David Reece, the band has cultivated a killer debut release.  On the eve of the discs release, we were able to pin down David Reece for our 10 Quick Ones - and he kicked it off with a big hello and thanking us for the interview...

1. Tell us a little about your latest release.  What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through?  Are there any hidden nuggets the band put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?

I would say one thing that draws you in is the musical moments. Frank is a very gifted melodic guitarist and he's left tons of pieces that you may not catch on the first few listens. Also Ferdy has laid down awesome keys layered throughout the album.

2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?

For me it was traditional country music, I grew up in the south and was exposed to it very young. I moved to Minnesota with my family around 9 years old and in school joined the choir where my choir teacher pushed me to be better because she said I had the talent if I wanted to work it. My first recital was "Yesterday" by McCartney and the crowd loved it just her [choir teacher] on guitar and me singing. In those days though boys teased you and made fun of you if you were in choir so I quit so as not to get my ass kicked! LOL!

3. Who would be your main five musical influences?

George Jones, Paul Rogers, Stevie Ray Vaughn, UFO, and Zepplin.

4. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be?

I would love to do an album with Jimmy Page

5. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before?

Hmm... Thoughtful lyrics; soulful; sincere.

6. What’s the best thing about being a musician?

The best thing for me is I find it the purest way to express myself.

7. When the band are all hanging out together, who cooks; who gets the drinks in; and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a sing along?

We all cook, I usually crack out the beers! And after we have eaten and had a few, Frank usually breaks out a guitar and we play classics and write too.

8. If you weren’t a musician, what would be your dream job?

I will go back to ranching when I retire it's a real passion for me.

9. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over”?

I'll be totally honest with you and the readers. First I would have said no to many of the so called managers and record companies instead of being fearful of being dropped. Also I would like to have been more confident and better with relationships in my work and personally. I have gotten stronger as a person and able to feel good about myself and my music now and it really shows I think. Rock and roll is a full contact sport you gotta have balls to survive if your serious about it!

10. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?

That's a tough one! I've learned after doing so many records there's good and bad elements during the process. I do however feel being in the space where Zeppelin and Bad Company were at that time would have been surreal. They had such creative flow going on and created an atmosphere that carries on till today because basically they were just cool!

Thanks again!! And many thanks to you and your readers for asking me to share my story - REECE
