According to a recent press release: "Rock music should be dangerous. It should be unpredictable. It should be unexplainable. Enter KILL THE PRECEDENT. Seven maniacs from Sacramento, CA raze and shred expectations with a singular style of crossover gonzo gutter thrash fueled by reckless punk abandon on their upcoming EP, Some Version of the Truth." Exclaims one of the vocalists Twig the Exfoliator: "So much music is missing a sense of urgency. We want to bring that danger back." We were able to get Twig to toss 10 answers at us... read all about it here!
Growing up, my parents always played their extensive record collection. There wasn’t much TV, but always a lot of great 70’s bands being played in my house. Wings, Joe Cocker, Boz Scaggs, and of course Steely Dan to name a few. I had no choice but to continuously listen. I started playing saxophone in junior high, then moved onto piano. After discovering Punk and early 80’s Hardcore from my older sister’s friends, I was hooked. Later picking up the bass and trying to sing (scream).
2. Who would be your main five musical influences?
I can’t speak for the band. But later in life, and probably the most influential bands in mine were Minor Threat, DRI, Bad Brains, 7 Seconds, and then Jane’s Addiction.
3. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be?
Perry Farrell, fuck… Maybe Ian Mckaye. Tough question.
4. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before?
Aggressive! I always used to say like Minor Threat meets Ministry, but have swayed from that over time. More like Skinny Puppy meets Fugazi. I don’t fucking know.
5. What’s the best thing about being a musician?
It’s just fucking fun. Can’t live without writing music. None of us have ever made much money, nor expected to. It’s has always just been our life style. I guess it’s being able to get together with a bunch of great friends and write the music you enjoy. Could never ask for more!
6. When the band are all hanging out together, who cooks; who gets the drinks in; and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?
We all love to cook, and obviously eat. Nobody. It’s been awhile since we’ve went camping and cracked out the acoustic.
7. If you weren’t a musician, what would be your dream job?
I have a great job building bars and restaurants for Mikkeller at the moment. I’m a contractor. Love it. Love building shit!
8. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over”?
Yep! Signing my last band Red Tape to Roadrunner Records. What a crock of shit they feed you. Not the label for them.
9. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?
Jane’s Addiction’s “Nothing’s Shocking.” I got weirdly way into that. A lot of acid going around for those 15 years.
10. What, for you, is the meaning of life??
I don’t fucking know.
11. BONUS – tell us a little about your latest release. What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through? Are there any hidden nuggets the band put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?
I always give every album or single a couple listens. I suggest they do the same. There are some very interesting progressions and melodies going on in the background. If you don’t like it… who the fuck cares.
