Since stepping out into the underground music scene, Jonezen has been outspoken, especially about his struggles with substance abuse – even choosing his moniker as an acknowledgement of that time. From his debut, award winning release Live From Rehab, which he wrote and recorded while in treatment, to his new single “Bars”, which speaks honestly about the lack of respect for real lyricism in hip-hop, he’s spitting truth at every given chance. “Bars”, a Brian Bolen produced track, has an undeniable anthemic feel with alternative rock sound that provides an aggressive musical base for the melee of Jonezen’s verses. An attack on mumble rap, on music without substance, on the laziness of emcees these days, Jonezen is calling it out and joining the ranks of artists bringing meaning back into the music. He shares, “I’m constantly working to develop my craft, being creative and pushing the envelope and making music that’s authentic to who I am as a person.”

When Live From Rehab was released, Jonezen won the Los Angeles Music Awards in 2013 and 2014 for Hip Hop Artist and Solo Performer of the year. In 2015 he won #1 Contender at the Underground Music Awards and was nominated at the 2016 Hollywood Music In Media Awards for best Hip Hop along side artists such as Pink and Justin Timberlake.

The rapper/writer/guitarist has toured with Bone Thugs N Harmony, Swollen Members, Mad Child and has recorded with Gucci Mane. If there is an ‘edge’ to his lyrical content, it is metaphorical and to prove a point. “All people, all beliefs, races, creeds, religions, sexes, deserve respect and equal treatment under the law and from people.  That’s what I believe and how I conduct myself in my daily life.”

His writing process varies by track, but the constant theme is that he lets the songs come – he never rushes his creative process.  “If I get to a place where I am stumped, I just walk away and come back the next day,” he explains. “I repeat that until the track is done.”  Days, weeks or months may pass, but every song has its time in Jonezen’s world.  “Bars” was one track where he came in to the process with a strong idea.  The rhythm went from his head, filtered by producer Brian Bolen, into an epic sounding, recording. “Once we had the beat done I took it home wrote it over the course of a couple weeks,” says Jonezen. “I put a lot of time into that track. We wanted this to sound like a blend of styles, something totally out of the box that I hadn't done before. I think we accomplished that.”

Pushing the boundaries as he moves forward in his career, Jonezen is living proof that you can overcome anything set in your way – taking it all one day at a time.
