LOS ANGELES, CA | March 23, 2017 – Becoming known for his “fast, intimate rhymes and rock vibes” [Myspace], Detroit-born, Los Angeles-based Jonezen is truly carving his own lane. Taking hip-hop and turning it on its head, the rapper, songwriter, and guitarist is fearlessly incorporating what some might find as surprising influences into his songs. He’s becoming a tastemaker in alternative hip-hop with his bold genre-melding, exemplified in his last single, “Bars,” which Crave Online raved was “a relentless, nu-metal meets hip hop track that feels like an assault on the senses.”

While he’s putting work in the studio, Jonezen continues to impress with his now identifiable signature sound. Today he’s partnered with Idobi Radio to unleash an anthemic, arena-ready new track, “Way Up,” featuring guest vocals from Marty James (Snoop Dogg, E-40). Driven by motivational lyrics, swagger-filled guitars, pulsating percussion, and infectious handclaps, “Way Up” feels like a modern hip-hop take on Queen’s “We Will Rock You.”

When asked about the inspiration behind “Way Up”, Jonezen shares, “Being the follow up to 'Bars', this is a dope track in that it showcases a different side of what I do. It’s not just 100% in your face lyrics. It’s still got the rock vibe but it also has a softer edge to it. Marty James killed the hook, which is super catchy. The song is really about getting gone, making moves, taking things to the next level. I wanted to make a record that people, no matter where they were from or what kind of sound they were into, could get behind and I think 'Way Up' does a good job of that.”

Some of the best and most iconic music comes from artists of who’ve persevered through hardships and know all too well the darker side of life. Their authenticity-soaked lyrics reflect substance; sharing accounts of their struggles, shining light on societal issues, giving voice to those who cannot speak for themselves and using their platform to ignite important conversations – and Jonezen is poised to be one of those influential artists.

Since stepping out into the underground music scene, Jonezen has been outspoken, especially about his struggles with substance abuse – even choosing his moniker as an acknowledgement of that time. His debut critically acclaimed release Live From Rehab, which he wrote and recorded while in treatment, launched him to success. Jonezen reflected on overcoming his addiction and how that played a part in his writing process and overall career in an in-depth interview with Psychology Today – read the compelling story HERE.

People want to see this underdog win. Jonezen’s success continues with awards and accolades piling up – he won the Los Angeles Music Awards in 2013 and 2014 for Hip Hop Artist and Solo Performer of the year. In 2015 he won #1 Contender at the Underground Music Awards and was nominated at the 2016 Hollywood Music In Media Awards for best Hip Hop artist. He has also toured with Bone Thugs N Harmony, Swollen Members, Mad Child and has recorded with trap music’s godfather, Gucci Mane. If there’s an ‘edge’ to his lyrical content, it is metaphorical and to prove a point. “All people, all beliefs, races, creeds, religions, sexes, deserve respect and equal treatment under the law and from people.  That’s what I believe and how I conduct myself in my daily life.”

Pushing the boundaries as he moves forward in his career, Jonezen is living proof that you can overcome anything set in your way – taking it all one day at a time.
