INTERVIEW: LUCA from KILLSET - May 2017

May 30, 2017  •  Leave a Comment

According to a recent press release: "KillSET is the combination of a professional, well-oiled, finely tuned metal machine and an explosive, super charged charismatic front man - as evidenced by their upcoming album, ‘S.T.F.U.’ (release date: June 23rd). Having been produced by Eddie Wohl (Fuel, Smile Empty Soul, ill Niño, 36 Crazyfists) and mastered by Maor Appelbaum (Faith No More, ill Niño, Sepultura), this sophomore effort is polished and ready to take over the world. The leadoff single/video, “Killers in the Pit,” serves as the perfect introduction to the unique flavor of the band with crushing riffs, shouted vocals, and heavy rhythms." We get Luca from the band to answer our 10 Quick Ones about the upcoming release and more...

1. Tell us a little about your latest release.  What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through?  Are there any hidden nuggets the band put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?

Our latest release is the single, "Killers In The Pit"!  It is simply a song for our fans, the Killers!  It’s for everyone that supports our music. It’s for everyone that takes the time out of their lives to come down to our shows and tear up the place with us! It's about finding a positive and fun way to get rid of that extra energy, anxiety and stress that so many people feel in their lives. We decided to drop this single first because music needs some flavor right now and we're bringing that not only with this track, but the whole S.T.F.U. album!  Our diehard fans are called, The Killers, so they know what's up with this track and can see we are showing them appreciation for all the support they have given us over the years.

2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?

I've been singing and writing ever since I can remember. My mother is a very talented vocalist and music was always around growing up. The moment I realized I wanted to be a musician was at a Rage Against The Machine and Wu-tang Clan concert when they toured together. I just remember the crazy energy of the artists and the crowd! It was amazing how these two groups brought everyone together for that one night and it just blew my mind. I saw my future that night and that future was performing and bringing people together through music.

3. Who would be your main five musical influences?

This is always an interesting question for me to answer because the first style of music that I was really into at a young age was rap.  Once I started listening to rock and metal, I fell in love with it and knew it was was what I was meant to do in life, but my influences definitely range because of that. I would say that I've been heavily influenced by Tupac, Biggie, Sevendust, Nonpoint, and Rage Against The Machine. Told you it was a wide range..haha!

4. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be?

That's a tough one. I think it would have to be Elias Soriano from Nonpoint. I love the way he approaches the lyrics and melodies in his songs. We definitely have different writing styles, but I'm always very impressed with what he creates! I find myself listening to their tracks and thinking if I was given that instrumental, I would have never thought to approach it that way. That's why I respect the hell out of him and would love that collaboration!

5. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before?

Chaotic Melodic. There are moments of pure aggression and chaos slammed directly into catchy melodies and simple beauty. We are a very versatile band and create diversity not only from song to song on the album, but also within each song.  We bring a certain style and flavor that I believe is lacking and desperately needed in music these days.

6. What’s the best thing about being a musician?

Creating and being able to perform what I created.  The ability to tell a story and see people respond to it. The blessing of being able to get up on a stage and bring a group of people together in that moment.

7. When the band are all hanging out together, who cooks; who gets the drinks in; and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?

We mostly hang out when we are rehearsing and there is no cooking, drinking or acoustic guitars happening at that time.  Well, maybe a little drinking...lol.

8. If you weren’t a musician, what would be your dream job?

Radio DJ. I was actually a dj at a Rock station on the east coast before I moved out to L.A.  It was the coolest gig in the world for me because I was able to be around the music I loved and interact with bands that I truly respected.

9. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over”?

No. Ready... here comes the generic answer about mistakes. "Well, I wouldn't change a thing because everything I've been through has made me who I am and has gotten me to where I am today"....haha! Honestly, of course there have been missteps, but I choose to not dwell on them and instead focus positively on the future.

10. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?

It would have to be Evil Empire by Rage Against The Machine! I love that album and it would be awesome to be a part of something that was so fresh and groundbreaking at the time.
