Guaranteed to warm the hearts of mothers everywhere and give them an enormous laugh ahead of their big day, the wacktarded video depicts a kid’s birthday party gone totally ape shit – and the song for the video was actually inspired by true events. Says Dittie DJ K-Heyyy, “I was at a school event when the kids were doing karaoke on stage and they were AWFUL. So I had this whole image in my head of The Big Ditties pushing the kids out of the way and taking over and showing them how it's done. Also the hook being ‘Mom, just quit the band!’ means ‘Mom give up your dreams and grow up!!” and I loved the idea of us being like ‘Hell no! Why should we?!’”
DJ K-Heyyy – a mom who has worked with Hall of Famers like Better Than Ezra and Edwin McCain and has had original songs in films starring Oscar-winners Keanu Reeves and Mia Tyler – is joined in The Big Ditties by Tu-PO, another mom with a background in classical and jazz (huh?!) and primordial libertine Ad-Rik who serves as the "anti-mom", giving the other two a lot of hell in their songs for squeezing out babies in the first place.
Heartwarming all around, they were even banned for life from Chicago's City Winery -- I guess staging having your own kids forcibly removed from the stage was offensive to some "proper" parents.
Basically these thug-divas out-do Bad Moms and they are coming to help you laugh your domesticated face off.
The Big Ditties are currently in the process of getting unbanned from City Winery, collecting their sick kids from school and plotting an upcoming debut album that will include such wholesome fare as “Your Pussy’s In Love With Your Best Friend’s Husband”. Album release and touring info coming soon… you’ve been warned.
About THE BIG DITTIES: “Mom Just Quit The Band” the soon-to-be-well-received video debut from Chicago’s The Big Ditties has been described as “A Train wreck. Sad!” as well as “Pure Comic Genius.” This "movement in moronacy” (Wall Street Journal) had to come from somewhere. The core band of DJ K-Heyyy, Ad-Rik and Tu-PO delivers comedic music that crosses multiple genres and takes no prisoners. Whether they are being pampered on stage by their Love Slaves or mashing up songs about venereal diseases, The Big Ditties stage antics are not for the faint of heart. Don’t let their thug-diva personas fool you. Their calling to lower benchmarks everywhere actually came from humble beginnings.
Tu-PO and Ad-Rik were both set fixtures in the Chicago music scene. It was only a matter of time before these kindred spirits met and decided to play music on their own terms; as a duo in a dive bar with a shitty PA and all the free booze they could have. That free booze kept them at that dive bar for nearly two years, until the PA finally gave out. But it was during this time that the magic began. The duo discovered their ability to take a perfectly good cover tune and twist it into something that made people spit out their beers from laughter. If only they had a third harmony….
Enter DJ K-Heyyy. Tu-PO met DJ K-Heyyy over a few too many bottles of wine at a play date for their kids. Although she never heard DJ K-Heyyy sing a single note, Tu-PO liked the way she threw back and asked her to join the band. Being of refined musical pedigree (her dad ran the prestigious Northwestern University Music Program for 25 + years) and an artist formerly signed to Atlantic Records, DJ K-Heyyy seemed a natural fit for The Big Ditties. Tu-PO studied classical music at Interlochen Arts Academy and jazz at the University of Miami where she learned to scat fluently in multiple languages. Ad-Rik was just...well a musical savant of sorts.
Despite Ad-Riks trepidation of not knowing a single thing about DJ K-Heyyy, the first rehearsal was a match made in heaven. Even more magic was made as the trio began composing original songs that far surpassed the ridiculous arrangements of their cover songs. When they had enough material to play live they began to do so, much to the chagrin of their friends and family. Amongst their first performances was a show at Chicago’s City Winery which resulted in a lifetime ban. Offensive language? Check. Poor taste in gender, ethnic and religious humor? Check. Were they to be daunted? Certainly not! They simply decided that offending people across America was their calling.
Which brings us back to the reason we are all here – the “Mom Just Quit The Band” video. Based on an actual conversation between a Dittie and her offspring, the video showcases the band’s (well, two of them at least; Ad Rik took a pass on the kid thing) unique ability to balance the demands of Motherhood with that of their ‘higher’ musical calling.
