Saint Ballantine Bio: Emerging from the striking atmosphere of a modern creative commune known as the Clubhouse comes Saint Ballantine - a "Gangsta Indie Rock" outfit comprised of producer / musicians Andrew Thomas Reid and Brian 'Sene' Marc. Founded by Reid over 7 years ago, the Clubhouse is a South Brooklyn Victorian-style mansion that has housed over 50 musicians and artists in a supportive tribe-like environment. After partaking in various musical projects birthed from the collective, including Denitia & Sene and Recess, Reid and Sene came together to create diverse yet sonically satisfying tunes for this new endeavor. "The first time I came [to the Clubhouse] was five years ago, and it was supposed to be for 30 minutes just to lay down one verse, but I stayed all night," Sene told the NY Times. He and Reid had instant writing chemistry, and the songs flowed from there. "Sene and I really spawned this creative community together, as far as the writing side goes," notes Reid. "This project is kind of a coming back to where we started so that we can just be the two of us. It's exciting to write songs with him." Getting their start in this artist incubator let the duo embrace their individual attitudes while drawing from the numerous artists around them to create their distinctive electronic music.
The pairing of these two long time collaborators as Saint Ballantine allows for a return to their roots with new perspectives in tow, resulting in what Rolling Stone has called "serrated, beat-driven synthesizer experiments" combined with fresh signature sounds. The production duo pride themselves on blending aspects of various genres in both their musical elements and lyrical content. Dark and meaningful concepts are often encased in intricate down-tempo jams, making each Saint Ballantine track worth exploring. Both musicians specialize in mixing numerous influences and shared priorities to create their genre-bending 'experiments,' but the music is never harsh or restrictive. "Although Saint Ballantine has sharp sonic opinions, it's really accessible to a lot of people and I think that's important," says Reid. He and Sene successfully touch on complex situations as well as lighter universal topics, allowing virtually anyone the chance to vibe with Saint Ballantine.
"It's important for me to make music that everyone feels like they can own," notes Reid. "We strive to make music that everyone can feel part of and not excluded from." This emphasis on community is epitomized in the upcoming BKLYN1834 Compilation that features Saint Ballantine's smooth and soulful track "Enough" alongside work from six Clubhouse-mates. While that compilation is due out in November, Saint Ballantine and are working to release their debut EP through Tommy Boy Entertainment (Method Man, Ghostface Killah) later this year. The first single from that project, titled "The Stoned," consists of cruising synth-based production paired with mellow yet enchanting vocals that will have listeners hooked from the first note.
