(New York, NY) – Brooklyn based theatrical rockers Sky-Pony will release its debut album, Beautiful Monster, on December 4th via Knitting Factory Records. Fans can listen to the first new song “The Watcher” exclusively at Diffuser.fm at http://bit.ly/1GnFxNW. The song is an ode from a stalker to her stalkee. “Songs about unrequited love from a female P.O.V. are so often sad and yearning,” says songwriter Kyle Jarrow, “We wanted to subvert that with a fun and empowered, albeit slightly unhinged, female perspective.”
Sky-Pony is the brainchild of Jarrow and his wife Lauren Worsham, who serves as lead singer. Jarrow is an Obie Award winning writer for the stage, film and television whose most recent projects include the book for the upcoming SpongeBob Musical and The Drop, a drama series for the CW television network. Worsham is a Broadway performer who’s a Drama Desk award winner and was nominated for a Tony Award for her role in the Broadway show A Gentleman’s Guide To Love and Murder). The band’s lineup is completed by a talented cadre of other musicians/performers.
The Brooklyn-based band has built a cult following for its live shows which serve up lush, lyrical, often cheeky indie-pop with a healthy dose of drama. This raucous eight-person band is known for its highly-theatrical sets—incorporating choreography, costumes and projections. Their shows are perhaps best described as a cross between rock concert, performance art, and carnival. In the past they’ve included acrobats, burlesque dancers, beatboxers and full dance squads. The debut full length album, Beautiful Monster, was produced by Jarrow and producer/engineer Michael Tudor, whom the band met through musician friend and collaborator Duncan Sheik. Tudor is known for his work with Sheik, The Strokes, Rufus Wainwright and others. Sky-Pony has released one EP prior to the Beautiful Monster release and the band has garnered rave reviews from media for the live performances:
"An energetic Brooklyn indie band with a penchant for theatrical stagings and choreography." - New York Times
"A 1960s girl group on crack - tight, fierce, hilarious and out of their minds." - The Wall Street Journal
"One of the most talented singers and performers in New York." - Flavorpill (about Lauren Worsham)
"Magnetic…lively electro-pop melodies with synchronized dance moves." - NJ Star-Ledger
“You're never quite sure what to expect from one of their gigs.” - Deli Magazine
Sky-Pony’s debut full length Beautiful Monster brings together Worsham’s powerhouse vocals with Jarrow’s hooky and lyrically rigorous songwriting. The goal was simple: to create a suite of songs that was both fun and smart, with darkly wry subject matter delivered from a strong female perspective. It’s a “darkly poppy worldview,” as described by Jarrow, that’s perhaps best expressed by a lyric off the record: Everyone will die… and that makes me feel better about the mess I’m in. The album is a blast of lush, clever indie-pop. Worsham is backed by a fiery five-piece including guitar, bass, drums, keyboard and cello. In addition, two female backing vocalists provide Motown-inspired harmonies. The result is an amalgam that is simultaneously boisterous and danceable.
As Sky-Pony prepares for the December 4 release of Beautiful Monster, the band couldn’t be more excited. Jarrow says, “It’s a party record that also plumbs some depths.” Worsham explains that there are some exciting things on the horizon as they promote the record: “The band is gearing up for a stage show in early 2016, a concert-theater hybrid that incorporates songs from the record as well as several others. Directed by Tony nominee Sam Buntrock, it’ll run for six weeks at NYC’s Ars Nova.”
Sky-Pony is Lauren Worsham – lead vocals, Kyle Jarrow – songwriter / keyboardist, Kevin Wunderlich – guitarist, Eric Day – bassist, Perry Silver – drummer, David Blasher – cellist, Kristin Piacentile, Jessi Suzuki – backing vocals.
