I love hanging out and shooting shows at more intimate venues, especially when lesser known artists roll through town. I was able to catch The Bacon Brothers on their current Shakey Ground tour as it stopped for a double-header at the cozy Lexington Village Theatre. With no opener on the agenda, the packed house was treated to over 90 minutes of music from the brothers - Michael and Kevin - and their band. From the opening notes of "Play!" on through the one-two punch encore of "Only a Good Woman" and "Peace Dance/Footloose," this show was full of great music that saw the band working together from song to song, whether it was coming across with solid guitars, rhythm section, and vocals on a great track like "Tom Petty T-Shirt" to "Perfect Pitch" that saw four band members display their ukulele skills. Most of the songs in the set were new to me, as I wasn't very familiar with the bands catalog before the show, some totally new music was played tonight with opener "Play!," as well as "Bigger Than A Song" and "The Way We Love" being tossed into the set. One of my favorite tracks of the night was from the 2018 self-titled release - Tom Petty T-Shirt stuck with me from the last note until now... I can still hear the chorus bouncing around my brain as I write this review. Other highlights from the show was the cool vibe of "So Cal Smooth," the sentimental lyrics and great lead vocals from Michael on "Don't Lose Me Boy." The main part of the evening closed out with a great cover of Tom Petty's "Don't Do Me Like That" as well as a killer trio of songs made up of "I Feel You," "Beneath Perfection," and "She's Easy on My Eyes," which all demonstrate the diversity in sound and influence of the band. I cannot wait for the opportunity to see the band play again some time and hear the songs live... after listening to the songs on iTunes, there is something special that comes across when the brothers and their more than capable band deliver these songs in a live scenario. Hopefully neither of the brothers day jobs keeps them out of Michigan for very long.
